Miller (b. 1934) was born in Middleton and grew up in Mount Horeb (Wisconsin). After high school, he joined the Navy and served two tours in Vietnam. For the first tour (1965), he was a Leading Engineering Petty Officer on the USS Hissem. For the second (1971), he was part of the MACV Naval Advisory Group, training South Vietnamese sailors in engine repair.
